William was a 1937 graduate of Janesville Wisconsin High School. He joined the National Guard (32nd Tank Company, Red Arrow Division) which was federalized in the 192nd Tank Battalion in 1940. He was one of 99 men from Janesville who were in Company A of the Battalion. He was sent to Clark Field in the Phillipine Islands in the fall of 1941. William was held as a prisoner of war from April 1942 until 1945. He was one of only 35 of the 99 men to return home. He stayed in the Army after the war.
