Lavelle was the son of Robert Henry Barron and Ela Frances Rebecca Rockett Barron. He attended Louisiana A&M College and Louisiana State University. Lavelle was the husband of Geraldine Grubbs.

Cpl. Travis Lavelle Barron served in World War II. In 1942, he entered the United States Army and trained at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. Lavelle served in the European Theater of Operations. He was wounded in Italy. Lavelle was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and GC Medal. He was discharged in 1944.
