Ashbrook was the son of Isaac D and Anna M (Coleman) Snellbaker later Snelbaker, his date of birth varies from place to place. In the 1900 NJ census he gave January 1870 but his delayed birth record gives January 1871.

Ashbrook, who never married, was at one time a marble salesman / monument dealer. He became a millionaire as the manufacturer of LeFrance soap.

He built a three story graystone house in 1933 that was considered a mansion for its time. After Ashbrook's death the mansion became a home for "worthy women". The home funded by a multimillion-dollar endowment is still in operation today.

"Ashbrook D. Snelbaker --
A. D. Snelbaker, of Woodstown, was born on a farm about three miles from this town. His father died when the boy was eleven years old and the youngster worked on a farm for the magnificent sum of $6.00 a month. In 1885, when he was 15 years old, Mr. Snelbaker entered the employ of E. B. Humphreys, as clerk in Woodstown's leading general store. He remained in Humphrey' store for a period of nine years, and his pay, $2.00 per week, in the beginning, was increased year by year until it had reached $9.
Mr. Snelbaker was then 24 years of age, and had saved up $500.00 with which he started in the monumental business.
His education amounted to practically nothing, and yet today, Mr. Snelbaker is a director of one bank and one trust company and is connected with five large corporations, president of three. His life is a good example of the self made type of American, who through perserverance and energy makes a name for himself in the world.
Mr. Snelbaker originated "Lawnside", one of the beautiful places in Woodstown, and he also heads a large corporation manufacturing a product that is sold all over the world.
Devoting a large amount of his time to civic affairs, Mr. Snelbaker, however, has never accepted any public office, but is actively engaged in all work that will benefit Woodstown. Last Friday evening he was elected President of the Woodstown Chamber of Commerce for the seventh consecutive year. He has been in the monumental business for twenty five years, the firm, located in Woodstown, is known as Snelbaker & Donor."
