The following is from "Whence Ye Came", by Helen Wilson-Hunt

James Harvey Thomas was born the 21 Jan 1816 in Warren County, Ohio. he was the fourth child of Isaac and Lydia Thomas. (Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 5, Ohio, Pg. 131)

According to his obituary ("Daily Pantagraph" Chenoa, McLean Co., Ill, Friday morning, September 19, 1902 ***page 7 - Column 2***) there were seven children in the family. The Isaac Thomas family moved to Fayette County, Indian when James Harvey was three years old. He received his early education there. James graduated from the Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia in 1840. At that time he was married to Ann Creekmore. They had been married 3 Dec 1835 and she died 3 Jan 1841.

On the 6 Nov 1842 Dr. James H. Thomas married Susanah Crawford in Fayette County, Indiana. They lived in Monticello, White county, where Dr. Thomas established a medical practice. To this union was born Enas Addison Thomas on the 11 June 1844. Grief again struck Dr. Thomas when death took Susanah on the 23 January 1847.

He re-married on the 16 July 1848 in Nonon, White Co., Ind. to Amanda Evans. She shared the rest of his life with him and followed him to death the 13 Sept 1907. They were blessed with four children: Ella, b. 22 Feb 1854; James E. b. 19 Jan 1860; Maude LeDore b. 21 Nov 1870; and Inez Irene b. 28 July 1874. (Pension Claim No. 155632).

On the 26th of April 1864, the medical profession of White county, Ind. organized a medical society. J.H. Thomas was one of the early members. (Counties of White and Pulashi Indiana, Historical and Biographical, Chicago:F. A. Battey & Co., Publishers 1883)

James Harvey Thomas was a recruiting officer at the beginning of the Civil War. he enlisted on the 1st day of October 1861 as a Captain in Co. I of the 46th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers Infantry. His army records describe him as, "age 45 years; height 6 feet 00 inches; complexion dark; eyes brown; hair dark." He resigned his position the 21 October 1862 at Helena, Arkansas for reasons of protracted sickness. A medical certificate, signed by Horace Coleman Surgeon 46th Reg Ind Vols, explained Dr. Thomas' illness on account of chronic hepatitis and disability from repeated attacks of malaria.

On the 29 Aug 1863, Captain James H. Thomas, mustered in as Assistant Surgeon in the 117th Reg. Ind. Vols. He mustered out with an honorable discharge the 29 Feb 1864 by reasons of: must out of his regiment Indianapolis, Indiana. (Military Service Record WC 562.191)

In August 1864, Dr. Thomas moved his family to Chenoa, McLean Co., Ill and was a practicing physician until 1879, when he was forced to give up his work on account of poor health. In 1883 he was elected police magistrate of Chenoa and held the position several years. He and Amanda shared fifty-four years of married life. he was on the first members of his family to fall away from the Quaker faith.

James Harvey Thomas died the 18 Sept 1902. His Illinois death certificate, signed by E.P.G. Holderness M.D., stated the immediate cause of his death as Typhoid malarial trouble with gangrene of foot and the infirmities of old age. The funeral service was held at the Methodist church in Chenoa Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. W. S. Welsh conducted the service and the interment took place in the Chenoa Cemetery, McLean County, Illinois. (Obituary)
