He was born May 24, 1903 in Clarion to Frank E. and Iva (Hunter) McElhattan.
He spent most of his life in the Elderton area and lived in Youngstown, Ohio for 20 years. He retired from Republic Steel Corp. of Youngstown and was employed as railroad inspector. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred L. (George) McElhattan, whom he married June 27, 1931; five sons, William J. RD 1, Shelocta, Thomas F., Enfield, Conn., James A. Atlanta, Ga., Robert R., Tulsa, Okla., and Kenneth E. Jasper, Ga.; six daughters, Mrs. William (Iva) Harbour, Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. Harry (Betty) Jackson, Rodgers, Ohio, Mrs. Marlin (Helen) Gillespie and Mrs. Charles (Gladys) Gillespie, both of RD 1, Shelocta, Mrs. Blaine (Ruth) Hankey, RD 1, Ford City and Mrs. Ben (Shirley) Woodard, Silver Creek, GA; three brothers, Marvin McElhattan, New Jersey, William, Clarion and Glenn, Apollo; two sisters, Mrs. Emory (Ruth) Miles, Ocala, Fla., and Mrs. Harold (Dorothy) Pierce, Kelly Station; 30 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, John; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were by the Clark Chapel, Elderton.
Burial was in Clarion Cemetery.
