ST. MICHAELS Katherine J. "Katie" Adkins died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at the Talbot Hospice House, Easton. She was 102. Born Feb. 24, 1910, in Holton [Houlton], Maine, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Frank Jackson Jr. and Lillian Spafford Jackson. She married Dr. John N. Adkins and they made their home in several locations, including Boston and Tidewater Virginia before moving to Talbot County. John died in May of 1998. Mrs. Adkins, or Katie as she was known by her friends, was a championship golfer from age 16, playing well into her 90s. She was deeply committed to every aspect of the game. While she enjoyed the social aspects of golf, she felt it important for players to know and adhere to the game's rules and etiquette, and have a careful sense of course management, as she said, "for the good of the game." In addition to being a superb golfer, Katie was a top brass bridge player and loved ballroom dancing. Mrs. Adkins was a supporter of the Talbot County Humane Society. She owned standard poodles and later raised toy poodles. Mrs. Adkins has no immediate survivors, but leaves numerous friends whom she touched. Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Adkins from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hurley and Ostrowski Funeral Home P.A., St. Michaels. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the historic Episcopal Church Cemetery in Irvington, Va.
