The Rev. Gerald A. Hoenig, 85, of Fort Madison died at 1:23 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at the home of his sister in Fort Madison.

Born Nov. 5, 1926, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Frank H. Sr. and Mary Johanna Schroeder Hoenig.

Father Gerald served 60 years as a Roman Catholic priest in the Davenport Diocese. He was a chaplain in the Army Reserves. He served the parish of St. Patrick's in Burlington from 1952 to 1965, and St. Patrick's in Ottumwa from 1965 to 1968.

He was chaplain of Sacred Heart Hospital in Fort Madison from 1968 to 1969 and the Iowa State Penitentiary from 1968 to 2007. He served as pastor of St. Mary's in Augusta from 1985 to 1988 and was pastor of St. Joseph's in Montrose from 1988 to 2001, when he retired. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in West Point and Loras Academy in Dubuque.
He graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport with a degree in philosophy and then attended St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.

He was a member of the Fort Madison Knights of Columbus Council 739. He loved coon hunting and farming.

Survivors include four sisters, Jean Helling and Bernadette Cramblit, both of Fort Madison, Gretchen Joachim of Silver Cliff, Wis., and Ruth Coffey of Wever; one brother, David Hoenig of Fort Madison, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
