Herman Axt, a Resident of Milo Township 70 Years, Died Saturday

The death of Herman Fredrick Axt occurred at his home in Milo township last Saturday, July 26, following an illness from bronchial pneumonia. He had attained the age of 79 years, 9 months and 16 days.
Herman Fredrick Axt was born in Germany on October 10, 1861. He came to the United States with is parents when he was four years old, and they located in Wisconsin. Five years later they moved to Mille Lacs county and located on the tract of wild land in Milo township, where Mr. Axt has resided ever since. On April 10, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Foss, also of Milo township. He leaves to mourn his departure his beloved wife and the following children: Ernest and Earl Axt, Myrtle Axt and Mrs. Clarence Johnson, all of Milo township. There are six grandchildren also living in that township as follows: Donald, Ronald, Ward and Cecil Axt, and Mrs. Omar Wedell. There is one great grandchild, James Johnson. Mr. Axt was a good neighbor, a loving husband and find father.
Mr. Axt and his parents came to Mille Lacs county in a covered wagon and were among the first few white families to settle in central Mille Lacs county. There was no railroad in the county at the time, and Milaca and Foreston were not in existence. The Indians had a camp on what is now the O.B. Kessler farm. The great forest fire of September 1, 1894, which sprang up all along the Great Northern Line from Foreston to Hinckley, and which destroyed the latter town with a loss of over 300 lives, passed a mile east of the Axt farm.
The funeral services for Mr. Axt were held on Monday, July 28, at the Sirene Funeral Chapel in Milaca, with Rev. Harold Hansen officiating. Burial was made in the Milo Cemetery.
