William R Akines – Age 83 of Hermitage, TN.,Born in Alabama in 1928 passed away August 26, 2011. Preceded in death by son, William R. Akines, Jr.; grandchild, Brian Morrison; great-grandchild, Sydney Gregory; parents, Roy & Ada Akines ; sister, Jeniece Akines. A WWII veteran, he was a survivor of the tragedy that befell the USS Indianapolis when it was sank off of the coast of the Phillipines by a Japanese submarine. Survived by wife, Margaret Bell Akines; daughters, Sandra (Buddy) Smith, Ramona Cherry (David) Riling, Marina Cherry (Ronnie) Weaver, Tina Cherry (James) Adams; son, Roy Michael "Butch" Cherry; mother-in-law, Margaret Bell Timbs; grandchildren, Rachel Riling (Mike) Sokoloff, Christopher Riling, Lindsay Riling, Michael (Heather) Gregory, Jason (Josette) Gregory, Jeffery (Summer) Barton, Bill Akines, III, David Cherry, Austin Welker, Sarah Akines, Bobby Akines, Kim Merritt, Christie MacArthur; thirteen great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Ashworth and he is loved and missed by many other family & friends. Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 29, 2011 at Hibbett & Hailey Funeral Home with Bro. Miles Cotham & J. Arch Warren. Pallbearers: Grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers: USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization & Pleasant Hill Church of Christ Members.
