He was born Dec. 26, 1927, in Texas, and came to Arcadia 35 years ago. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1992. He also worked part time at DeSoto Memorial Hospital and Home Owners Supply, both in Arcadia.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Am Vets. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Helen E.; daughters Michelle Gaylord of Tampa and Lynn Gilliam of Douglas, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Sheila E. Bromley of Little Rock, Ark.; a son, Timothy Whidden of Georgia; a stepson, Robert Eddy of Fort Myers; and 11 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6-8pm today at Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home in Arcadia. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia.
