Janice Kay Greer Swafford Ekrut
Born Sept, 23, 1947 — Died Dec. 30, 2008

A small-town girl with incredibly big ideas — not of wealth or power — but of revitalizing her hometown even though she lived hundreds of miles away. Jan Ekrut died in Austin of lung cancer on December 30, 2008. She had visions of her hometown of Electra, Texas, becoming as welcoming and interesting a smalltown as she experienced as she was growing up there.

Born September 23, 1947, in Electra, Texas, to Velma Lou Callander Greer and H.C. "Bud" Greer, Jan grew up in a home where service to others and volunteerism were watchwords. Her late father served as County Commissioner for Wichita County for many years; her mother is still a treasured community volunteer. Jan graduated from Electra High School in 1966 and began her career with IBM corporation in 1969 in Austin where she retired in 1999.

Even having lived in Austin for over 40 years, after retirement Jan and her husband Bob Ekrut directed their energies toward Electra. They spent time as well as money to create opportunities for the community's young people to learn about the town's history and to love and respect that history. The Youth Work Program Jan created resulted in the publication of a monthly newsletter about the history of Electra. It also produced a historic cookbook of local recipes and took on the task of making a sidewalk "museum" in the windows of empty storefronts in the downtown area.

A faithful supporter of the Electra Main Street program, she worked tirelessly toward the renovation of the Grand Theatre in the heart of town.

Her many, many honors include being named a finalist for the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Community Service in 2006 for the Wichita Falls, Texas, area and most recently, named as "Grand Marshal" for the Pump Jack Association Holiday of Lights Parade on November 29, 2008, in Electra. Too ill to attend the event, Jan cherished this recognition especially because her father had been named "Grand Marshal" for the parade a number of years ago.

Jan Ekrut was preceded in death by her father, H.C. "Bud" Greer; and her sister, Marie Greer Migura.

Survivors are her mother, Velma Greer of Electra; husband, Robert Edwin "Bob" Ekrut of Austin/Electra; children, Daron and Tina Swafford of Austin, Texas, Shelley and Lane Reed of Austin, Texas, Mark and Darla Ekrut of Georgetown, Texas, Kerry and Maureen Ekrut of Shady Shores, Texas, Gwen and Gary Krause of Leaky, Texas, Mischel Baldwin of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Cassidy and Joey Swafford, Nash Reed, Matt, Andrew and Kara Andel, Savannah, Abby and Ethan Ekrut; special family members, Gayle and Vicki Swafford of Richmond, Texas; and brother-in-law, Carroll Migura, San Antonio, Texas.

Services will be held in Austin, Texas, 4 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2009, at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home, 9700 Anderson Mill Road. In Electra, services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2009, at First Baptist Church. Burial will be at New Electra Cemetery under direction of Dutton Funeral Home of Iowa Park, Texas.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2009, at First Baptist Church of Electra, Texas.

Jan's special request is for each person to bring one flower to the funeral which will then be placed in a vase to represent the beauty she saw in all of her family and friends. In lieu of other flowers please consider memorials in honor of Jan Ekrut may be directed to Electra Heritage Society, c/o Paul Hayers, 109 North Main, Electra, Texas, 76360; or Electra Grand Theatre, c/o Jannis Hayers, 101 North Main, Electra, Texas, 76360.
