BORGER — Eddie Douglas Adkins, 94, of Borger died Monday, Sept. 3, 2012.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church in Borger with the Rev. Steve Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Directors of Borger.
Doug was born Aug. 4, 1918, in Thalia to Cappie and Georgie Huntley Adkins. He was raised in Thalia on a cotton farm. After college, Doug taught school for one year and then accepted a coaching and principal position at Draw-Redwine, near Tahoka. Doug served his country in World War II and was captured by Germans during the invasion of mainland Italy at Salerno. After 19 months of captivity, the
prisoner of war camp was liberated by the Russians on April 14, 1945. Discharged as a sergeant with two Bronze Battle Stars, Doug came to Phillips as assistant principal of the high school, teaching civics and English. Later, he became principal
of the grade school until retirement in 1984, having served 43 years in education. Doug married Wanda Rawls on May 30, 1948, in Lubbock, and they shared more than 63 wonderful years dedicated to each other.
Doug was a Christian and faithfully served his Lord as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. His Christian faith was the bedrock of his life. He served his communities as past president of Palo Duro Baptist Brotherhood, Panhandle School Leaders Association, Lions Club, Hutchinson County Red Cross, Borger Pony League Baseball and Hutchinson County Retired School Personnel. He was raised as a Master Mason on July 9, 1942. He was a member of Unity Lodge 1242. His greatest joys were his wife, family and serving anyone in need, particularly children. He and Wanda delivered Meals on Wheels for nearly 20 years. He loved to laugh and tell stories, often to Wanda's chagrin. He was a dedicated fan of the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, Phillips Blackhawks and every team his grandchildren
played on.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sweet wife, Wanda, on April 8, 2012; two brothers, Houston Adkins and James Adkins; and his beloved grandson, Joel Douglas Adkins.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Adkins and wife Barbara of Fritch and Robin Adkins and wife Valerie of Amarillo; a daughter, Marion Kindy and husband Danny of Fritch; a sister, Mary Matthews of Pflugerville; six grandchildren, Jason Adkins and Kyle Kindy and wife Kristi, all of Borger, Stacey Adkins of Lubbock, Scott Kindy and wife Nicole of Amarillo and Audrey Owens and husband Johnny and Kimberly Adkins, all of San Marcos; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Thursday in Brown Chapel of the Fountains in Borger.
