Arden. Derbamont. Sergeant, 191st Tank Battalion, U.S. Army. Son of Helmuth and Mary Lawrence Semper. Entered the service from Illinois. Awarded the Purple Heart.

additional info from relative -

"I am Albert Semper's nephew (posthumously). His remains from SWZ (where I understand they are interred). I understood Al served under Patton and died in a shell burst at canopy level while drinking tea on the top of a tank in the Arden. [I have the letter from his CO of the time, by way of "Bert" (Helmuth) Semper, my grandfather.)

If anyone cares, Al was the charismatic maniac of the family: handsome; strong; decided; irresponsible; and worldly. The leader of the family, in other words. When he died, it left the adults and children bereft, without a compass. Bert turned to devout Lutheranism while Grandma made more pies than ever. In other words, Al's death shook the family to it's core. It caused my father to take up an obsession with running that lead him to win the NCAA championship (gold) for his event 3 years running and win the the team NCAA track gold honors his senior year in college.

There are so many stories to tell."
