Berta Lorene Cash Walling, 94, died Saturday, December 20, 2008, in an Abilene hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, in Odessa.
Berta Lorene Cash was born July 28, 1914, in Boyd, Texas, to Walter and Louana Lefors Cash. She graduated from Burkburnett High School in 1932. On October 16, 1933, she married Lewis W. Walling in Walters, Oklahoma. She was a retired LVN, working at the Medical Center Hospital in Odessa for 14 years, retiring in 1976. In 1992, Berta was the first recipient of the Sally Knapp Award for her dedication to the YMCA. She and Lewis lived in Odessa for 42 years. After his death, she moved to Abilene in 2001, where she was a resident of Sears Methodist Center. She was a long time member of Crescent Park Baptist Church in Odessa, a member of the YMCA and a member of First Baptist Church in Tuscola.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Walter and Louana Lefors Cash; her husband in 1989; and a sister, Jewell Smith.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue Barnes and husband Charlie of Tuscola and Barbara Patterson and husband Gary of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Barbara Jean Ellis of Pearland, Todd (Pam) Patterson, Cory (Nikki) Patterson both of Amarillo and Kara Patterson of Canada; three great-grandchildren, Brandon Patterson of Nevada, Gary Charles Patterson and Marissa Patterson of Austin; three step-grandchildren, Donna Stimson of Euless, Terri Bobbins of League City and Cindy Patterson of Midland; ten step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grand-children; one sister, Barbara Kenneth of Richardson; a sister-in-law, Martha and Mike Alexander of Marshall; and two nephews.
