RAYNESFORD - Roy Vreeland Pritchett, 88, of Raynesford, died of cancer Monday at Peace Hospice in Great Falls.
At his request, no services are planned.
Roy was born June 22, 1921, in Salmon, Idaho. He was the youngest child in his family, and was raised by his grandparents after his mother's death when he was 2. He married Helen Whittaker on July 31, 1942. They lived in various locations in Oregon and Montana until returning to Great Falls in 1994. They celebrated 58 years of marriage until Helen's death on Jan. 25, 2001, exactly nine years prior to his death.
Roy was a WWII veteran; he served in the Pacific Theater as an army medic in the Philippines, and Hiroshima after the atomic bombing. He worked various jobs throughout Montana and Oregon, including being a bus driver, postal worker, truck driver, working for Job Corps and as an attendant at the downtown Great Falls parking garage.
Roy enjoyed volunteering at the Cascade County Juvenile Detention Center as a foster grandparent. He was honored with numerous awards and accolades for his service as a mentor to incarcerated youth. It was through the foster grandparent program that he met his wife, Joyce Pritchett. They married April 1, 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Pritchett; his children, Vicki Swartzenberger of Billings, Frank (Carol) Pritchett Sr. of Great Falls, and Donald Pritchett of Carlsbad, N.M.; his nine grandchildren, Patrick O'Neill of Washington, Michael O'Neill of Idaho, Elizabeth (Rick) Cappon of Utah, Marcy (Scott) Hendrickson of Oklahoma, Kathy Meierotte of Arkansas, Carl (Maria) Boles of Toston, Frank Pritchett Jr. of Helena, Don Bowles of Bozeman and Dakota (Jason) Rosales of Great Falls; his 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Roy loved animals, fishing, playing the banjo and being around his friends and family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to make people laugh and smile.
Memorials in memory of Roy Pritchett are suggested to the Cascade County Humane Society.
