On 15 Mar 1856 James, 22, married Sarah M. Stone, 25, daughter of Simon and Sally (Smith) Stone, at Sturbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both. They had at least four children before her death in 1902.
On 11 Aug 1862 James mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Southbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 29 years, 3 months and 15 days old. On 17 Sep 1862 he was wounded at The Battle of Antietam, Washington County, Maryland, on the hip. On 18 Apr 1863 James ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts due to disability from wounds received in action.
After the war, he moved west -- 1880 in Colorado, and by 1900 to Wyoming, and his first wife died in Alaska. In 1907 James married Mary Vanderlour, and they later lived in Wyoming.
