He was born July 29, 1922, in Napoleon, Ohio, to John and Marie Plassman Cordes. He entered active duty with the U.S. Army on July 22, 1943, and served during World War II. He was involved in the third wave on the Omaha Beach at Normandy. He fought from D-Day through the Battle of the Bulge and participated in the liberation of Paris. For bravery and courage, he received the Silver Star Medal with Oak Leaf Custer, the Bronze Star Medal, four Purple Hearts, the American Campaign Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was personally decorated by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 8, 1946, at Atterbury, Ind. He married June Journeycake on Dec. 20, 1945, in Napoleon. He was involved in the automobile business for more than 50 years. During that time, he had American Motors, Dodge, General Motors and Jeep franchises. Throughout his life, he was a member of the Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons: John Cordes, Austin, Texas; and Eddy Ben Cordes and his wife, Ellen, Lawton; a daughter, Jean Ann Richard and her husband, J.P., Lawton; a brother, Wilfred Cordes, Napoleon; two sisters: Marge Lange, Napoleon; and Marinetta Baden, Defiance, Ohio; six grandchildren: Ann Richard, Meg Richard, Beth Richard, Steven Cordes and his wife, Angela, Elizabeth Panko and her husband, Eddie, and Claire Cordes; and three great-grandchildren: Branden and Kye Cordes and Ethan Panko.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harvey Cordes; and a daughter-in-law, Sue Cordes.
