PIONEER HUMBOLDT COUNTY MAN DIES

Samuel Arnet Shields, 76, died Sunday morning as the result of a stroke. Death came suddenly. He was born in Ten Mile, Oregon. At the age of 18, he went to Idaho and drove 100 head of horses from Idaho to California, and after that he made his home in Trinity County.

In 1902 he married Lucena Hall Burgess of Blocksburg. During his lifetime he followed mining on the South Fork of the Trinity River, hauled freight from Hydesville into Trinity County, hauled bark from Briceland into Shelter Cove, was with the forest service in Trinity County for awhile, then operated his own mill in Blocksburg. In later years he was a millwright for the Vance Lumber Company at Elk River and for the Hammond Lumber Company in Samoa.

Shields has made his home in Eureka for the past thirty years, but during that time he managed and operated the ranch of his nephew, Harold Ford, in Zenia, Trinity County. In the last two years he has been at home in Eureka.

He is survived by his wife, Lucena Shields; four daughters, Mrs. Sadie Haight of Eureka, Mrs. Stella Johnson of Eureka, Mrs. Berniece Ford of Eureka and Mrs. Edith Orrell of Klamath Falls, Oregon; one son, George Shields of Willow Creek; four sisters, Mrs. Etta Kindred of Rio Dell, Mrs. Phoebe Brush of Ukiah, Mrs. Nora Lee of Rio Dell, and Mrs. Cora Jackson of Eureka; one brother, P. S. Shields of Ukiah; seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
