Joseph, the son of Abner Chase and Ann Elizabeth Holmes, was born in the town of Ulster, served in the US Army at the age of 22, then returned to the area to marry Ann Elizabeth Holmes b.1824. He was a stone-cutter in the blue stone quarries of Sawkill and Ruby.
