Martin Mitchell was born ca. 1808 in Kentucky; parents are unknown tho his father may have been named Nicholas. He migrated to Pulaski County, Missouri from Jackson County, Alabama around 1837-38 with his wife Mary, son Henry and daughter Harriet; also his brother Nicholas Mitchell and other siblings and their families. According to family tradition, they traveled along with the Cherokee Trail of Tears march. Martin's wife Mary is believed to be the daughter of Anderson Lipscomb. Martin's brother Nicholas Mitchell was married to Anderson Lipscomb's daughter Susannah.
Martin and his family lived in Waynesville, Missouri. He was Postmaster at Waynesville in 1854. Then, during the Civil War, he disappeared while hauling freight for the soldiers between Waynesville and Rolla...never seen or heard from again. It is believed he was murdered by Bushwhackers.

The above information was published by Mrs. Eulah Quiring, great-great-granddaughter of Martin Mitchell, in the book "800 Missouri Families: Volume 3" by Don Vincent.

NOTE: I have located a record of Martin Mitchell's appointment as Postmaster at Waynesville MO in 1857.
