Emerson A. "Lefty" Backstrom, 69, of West Newton, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, in UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born June 16, 1929, in Collinsburg, a son of the late Ernie and Sue Roslosnick Backstrom. He was a farmer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Backstrom in 1976; and sisters, Leona Piper and Carole Opfer in 1978.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Greenawalt Backstrom; a daughter, Debbie Blum of Smithton; three grandchildren; also a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME, West Newton. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John E. Duvall officiating.
Interment in West Newton Cemetery.
