Dr. Bigelow served in the First World War.He enlisted in 1916 while a student. He was wounded when a bullet shattered his leg and the injury required 6 oerations to return it to a less than adequate state.He served at Vimy Paschendale and Amiens.
Dr. Bigelow took his medical training at Queen's University and interned at Bellevue Hospital
in New York. He was married on June 11 1927 to Harriett T. Smith in Manhatten New York. They had one daughter Cynthia Ann Cependa who resided in Vancouver BC. He has two grandsons Michael and Scott. In Lethbridge he has a relative Kathleen Miller and her son who works as a dentist at one of the Bigelow Fowler Clinics. He also had a dedicated housekeeper and caregiver Margaret Sauer.
Dr, Bigelow set up a practice in Taber in the 1920’s before moving to Lethbridge in 1929. He worked under less than ideal conditions, travelling by car to his patients and sometimes getting stuck in gumbo mud and having to be pulled out by horse and and then taken on his way by the farmer on horseback. He worked for many years at the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge as a surgeon and family physician. In 1933 Dr. J.K. Bigelow and Dr. D. Fowler formed a partnership and founded the Bigelow Fowler Clinic in Lethbridge which today has evolved into several branches in Lethbridge. Dr. Bigelow had a very high regard for his operating partner Dr. Douglas Fowler.
Dr. Bigelow was an excellent doctor and a well respected member of the community. He was an early member of the Kiwanis Association. Dr. Bigelow attended the first organizational meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Lethbridge on 7 May 1929, and the club's charter meeting on 12 September 1929. Dr. Bigelow served as club president in 1933 and as Lieutenant Governor of Western Canada District in 1937. He became District Governor in 1940, and later was elected to the position of International Vice-President for 1945 and 1946. He was a member of Southminster United Church and his service was conducted from there with George Brown a long time friend giving the Eulogy. Dr. Bigelow by his own admission thought maybe he swore too much. When this was drawn to the attention of the Mother Superior at St. Michael Hospital she replied that the good doctor was not swearing he was just praying.
He was considered the "Dean of Doctors" in a writeup outlining his career in the Lethbridge Herald in 1982. Shortly before his passing he donated $200,000 for research at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital. Dr. Bigelow retired from the Bigelow Fowler Clinic in 1984 and passed in 1989 at the age of 91.
