From the Omaha World Herald Newspaper:
Boy, did he love good food," Teresa Ancona of Omaha said of her father, Samuel Anthony Ancona.

The 90-year-old former CEO of the Omaha grocery wholesaler Ancona Bros. Co. died of cancer Friday at Hospice House-The Josie Harper Residence, she said.

Samuel Ancona was the first of four siblings born in Omaha to Sicilian immigrant parents. He and his brothers, Carl Ancona and the late Joseph Ancona, took over the family business from their father and an uncle.

The elder Anconas started the business in 1915 as an Italian grocery and became a wholesaler in 1919.

Samuel Ancona and his brothers built the company into an $80 million, full-service wholesale grocery business, said Teresa Ancona.

In 1997, the three brothers were inducted into the Omaha Hospitality Hall of Fame. The Nebraska Restaurant Association also named Ancona Bros. purveyor of the year.

In 1998, Ancona Bros. merged with Midwest Wholesale Grocery Co. to become Ancona-Midwest Food Services. That company later went out of business, Teresa Ancona said.

Samuel Ancona had many interests outside of his business.

"He was a charter member of the Sons of Italy" and a founding member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, she said.

He loved to play golf and take photographs, and was active in the Knights of Columbus, Serra Club, Porsche Club of Omaha and the Archbishop's Committee for Educational Development.

He attended kindergarten through eighth grade at St. Joseph School and graduated from Creighton Prep and Creighton University — all three on the CU campus at the time.
