Ethmer was one nine children in his family. He was married twice. In his first marriage he had a son named Gale R. born in 1898. Ethmer's 2nd marriage was to Mary L. Dean in 1905 in Charlotte. There, they made their home for over 15 years. During that time Ethmer and Mary had one son, Palmer, who was born in 1916. Near the end of his life he was living with his son Gale and his family in the Jackson area. Ethmer is buried in North Clarence Cemetery, where his father and a number of his other brothers and sisters are buried.
