DEATH OF A PIONEER

David Kerstetter Passes Away Sunday Morning

LIVED HERE EIGHTY-TWO YEARS

One of Massillon's Oldest and Best Known Residents -- A Long Life Spent in this City and Vicinity Brought to a Close After Months of Suffering.

The Death of David Kerstetter, which occurred at his home in North Mill street at 11 o'clock Sunday morning, Feb 6. one of the few remaining pioneers of western stark county passed away at the age of nearly eighty-two years. A life-long resident of this city and vicinity, few men possessed a wider acquaintance or were held in higher esteem for their sterling integrity and social qualities. Mr. Kerstetter was born in Centre county, Pennsylvania, May 7, 1816. When he was but four weeks old his parents moved to this county arriving some time in the month of June, and bought and settled upon what is now known as the Cyrus Young farm, in Lawrence township, a short distance northwest of this city. When he was fourteen years of age his father was killed by a runaway team, and the work of clearing up the farm and paying off a large indebtedness devolved upon him.

In 1842 he married Sarah Weygandt, daughter of Henry Weygandt, an early pioneer of Lawrence township; she died in 1858, leaving four children -- David M., Melissa, John H. and Benjamin F. He married a second time, in 1859, Sarah Bliler, of Canton, who survives him, with four children -- Marietta, wife of Frank L. Traphagen, Viola, wife of Clarence Doxsee, Sara and Marcellus, all of whom reside in this city. Since 1865, he has resided in Massillon.

Mr. Kerstetter had long been a sufferer from kidney trouble, which was the direct cause of his death. He had been confined to his home but a short time, however, and while he suffered most excruciating pain at times the end came peacefully and he passed from this life into the great beyond without a struggle.

The funeral will be held from his late residence Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 sun time.
