In notes from Mary's daughter Stella, it is said that Mary attended St. Lawrence Church in Trzciana, Rzeszow, Poland; that she worked for Jewish families and Catholic rectories located mostly in the Czech region of Austria Hungary where Mary learned the Czech language.
It appears that Mary lived in present day [2007] Ostrava-Michalkovice, Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic before she emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland on 31 October 1907. She married John Kwasny less than 4 weeks later. It has been said that this might have been a "mail-order" bride arrangement, but this is not substantiated.
Mary is remembered for bootlegging, using the family bathtub; this was probably about 1935. She was an active vegetable and flower gardener, a creative and resourceful cook, and an avid reader.
I always heard the family story that Mary said that the trumpet vines should be in bloom by the time she gets home from the hospital. It was not meant to be. So I have uploaded a photo of a "shrine" I made for her in 2007. This includes framed dried flowers from the region Mary was from in Poland, a rosary, a commemorative "Mother" poem the family had, and of course, some trumpet blossoms.
