MULBERRY GROVE - Mrs. Maurice (Elsie A. Harms) Ireland, 87, of Mulberry Grove died 12:25 p.m. Monday (Dec. 7, 1987) in Fayette County Hospital, Vandalia.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday in St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vandalia. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. in Hohlt & File Funeral Home, Vandalia, and one hour before services in the church. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia. Memorials: St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Ireland was born in LaSalle County, daughter of George and Etta Harms. She was retired from Johnson, Stephens & Shinkle Shoe Co., Vandalia, and was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church and life-member of Rebekah Lodge, Vandalia. She married Maurice Ireland in 1944. He died in 1956.
Surviving are her sons, Carl Arndt Jr. of Macon; George Arndt of Sarasota, Fla.; Rev. LaVerne Arndt of Elwin; daughters Mildred Elam of Goshin, Ind.; Mrs. Clark (Etta) Plank of Salem, Mo.; Mrs. Vernon (Elsie) Ewers of Bartonville; Mrs. Robert (Linda) Kenbel of Mulberry Grove; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.
One daughter, two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

They split up and each remarried in the year 1944. Carl married Violet Lee Elam on 29 Feb 1944 in Vandalia.
Elsie married Maurice Emanuel Ireland in 1944 before he shipped out to the Pacific with the 96th US Infantry Division (Co."K", 383rd Infantry Regt.)
