Mary "Polly" Leake was born to James Leake, Sr., 17xx-1807, a Kentucky pioneer, and his wife Mary (_______) Leake.

In her father's will written July 7, 1807, probated September 7, 1807, and recorded in Will Book A on page 452 in the Washington County Clerk';s Office in Springfield, Kentucky their is a listing of her brothers, as follows, James Leake, the eldest son; Ignatius Leake; Raphael Leake, John Leake, Richard Leake, and Richard Leake. He leaves a bequest to his daughter Eleanor (Leake) Elliott, wife of James Elliott. He also leaves bequest to his grandchildren: Elizabeth Darnell and Benjamin Darnell, [my] grandson now at College. The last two would be the children of his daughter, Mary (Leake) Darnell Martin by her first marriage.

In the 1840 Federal Census of Marion County, Kentucky, Samuel B. Abell, enumerator, Sheets 35-A and 35-B, line three, we find Mary Leake, a widow, listed between the entries for Valentine Downs and Martin Cissell, her son in law. Mary is listed as a female between the ages of 60-70 living in a household with one male aged 15-20 years, one male aged 20-30, two females under 5 years of age, one female aged 20-30 and a female aged 40-50.

Mary "Polly" (Leake) Darnell, c.1775-185x, daughter of James, Sr. and Mary (______) Leake, and widow of Henry Darnell, who she married Sept. 3, 1788 in Frederick County, Md.

She married secondly to Samuel Lee Martin. Their Washington County, Kentucky marriage bond was dated July 1, 1797. The Martin and Hardin marriage bonds, consents, attestations, and marriage returns disappeared from the County Clerk's office in Springfield, Kentucky in the 1930's or 1940's--what a loss.

Samuel and Polly (Martin) Darnell Leake married July 1, 1799 in Raywick, Washington (now Marion) Co., KY. At the time of his marriage Samuel Lee Martin became the step-father of Benjamin Darnell, 17xx-18xx and Elizabeth (Darnell) Gardner, 17xx-18xx.

Samuel and Polly had at least; Thomas D. Martin, 17xx-18xx; Ellender (Martin) Fenwick, 17xx-183x; Anne (Martin) Alvey, xxxx-18xx; Mary Catherine "Kitty" (Martin) Cissell, c.1807-1881; Cecelia Ann "Celia" (Martin) Cissell, c.1811-18xx; Elizabeth (Martin) Fenwick, c.1811-18xx; and Mary Ann "Maria" (Martin) Leake, c.1814-18xx.

This family lived about one mile west of Raywick on a farm at the mouth of Prathers Creek with the Rolling Fork River. Samuel was a farmer. I learned the location of his property from a stray/estray notice filed in the County Clerk's Office in Springfield. Marion County was taken from Washington County, Kentucky in September 1834.

Her husband,Sam, was baptized on his deathbed on April 26, 1838 by the Rev. Louis Nicholas Petit, S.J. pastor. Father Petit recorded this baptism at St. Charles Church, St. Mary, KY and said that this baptism was witnessed by his wife, several children, and relatives.

In the 1850 Federal Census of Marion County, Kentucky, District #1, household #301-301, Mary is listed with her daughter, Mariah's family as follows: Jerome Leake, 37, male, (all in the household were born in Kentucky except for Mary (Leake) Darnell Martin who was born in Maryland.); Maria Leake, 36, female; Mary A.
