Civil War: Company A and F, 7th California Infantry

Charles M. (sic, Nun) Moe was born at Mount Morris, New York, in September 1828. His father, Peter Moe, was a veteran of the war of 1812, and his mother was Sarah (maiden name unknown). Charles had moved with his parents to Eaton County, Michigan, by 1837. It was in Eaton County that he later married (1) Eliza Whipple (1830-1852?) on March 11, 1849. In 1850 he was living with Eliza and their daughter Mariette (born 1850) at Momence, Will County, Illinois (1850 US Census). Charles married (2) Mary Jane Sutton (183?-1859?) at Brush Creek, Fayette County, Iowa, about 1853. Their daughter Julia was born at Brush Creek in 1854. In 1857 Charles moved his family to Goodhue County, Minnesota, where he established a residence adjacent to his parents, Peter and Sarah Moe, and his brother David Moe, shortly before his daughter Eliza Jane was born at Winona on March 7. Later that same year he sent Mariette to live with her maternal grandparents, the Whipples, in Illinois. In 1860 Charles and his daughter Eliza Jane were living with his brother David at Lake Gulch, Kansas; Mary and Julia were not with them (1860 US Census). Charles later married (3) Ellen A. Hart (1842, MI-1909, OR) at the residence of George Crowell in Douglas County, Nebraska, November 22, 1861. Charles and Ellen then moved to Deseret, Utah, where their daughter, Deseret, was born September 22, 1862. Sometime in 1863 Charles moved his family to California, where Rachel was born in 1864. During the Civil War Charles enlisted as a private for 3 years at Sacramento October 15, 1864, and was mustered into Company A, 7th California Infantry, October 17. Private Moe was transferred to Company F and posted to Arizona Territory. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco April 13, 1866 (Orton, 769, 783). After the war Charles and Ellen had a son, Charles Willie, born in California in 1869. In 1870, Charles' daughter Eliza Jane, then 13, was living with his brother Ezra Moe and his family at Amity, Yamhill County, Oregon. Charles and Ellen had also moved to Yamhill County, where their daughter Sarah Oraella was born at McMinnville March 3, 1873. The following year Charles and Ellen were divorced in Clatsop County a few months before his daughter Eliza Jane, then 18, married Edwin Merrill in Columbia County, Oregon, on December 29, 1874. After his divorce Charles moved to San Francisco, California, where he worked as a carpenter. The 1880 Census found Charles living at Homer, Mono County, where he was employed as a carpenter. Sometime thereafter he relocated to Bakersfield, Kern County. He was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, on March 22, 1890. According to his Sawtelle Soldiers' Home record, Charles was a [twice] widowed [and once divorced] carpenter living at Bakersfield when he was admitted to the Sawtelle soldiers' home. His home record indicates his next-of-kin as his son, Charles Willie Moe, of Portland, Oregon. Charles filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at the Sawtelle soldiers' home July 29, 1890, and received application No. 876,688 and certificate No. 669,379. He was discharged from the Sawtelle soldiers' home at his own request on April 16, 1892, and died at Los Angeles February 8, 1893. Charles Nun Moe was a member of John A. Logan Post, No. 29, Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), whose members buried him in the G.A.R. plot in Evergreen Cemetery with full military honors.
