Owen Adkins was the son of Benjamin Adkins and Barthena Brinson. During the Mexican War he enlisted as a private along with his father in 1846. He was mustered into Captain Sluss's Company, 3rd Indiana Infantry. His father was killed in action at Cerralvo, Mexico, on December 21, 1846. Private Owen was mustered out in 1847 and moved to Iowa. He married Tabitha Jane Hargis in Polk County on November 6, 1849 and was a miller in Warren County by 1860 (1860 US Census). During the Civil War he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant at Carlisle, Iowa, September 6, 1861, and mustered into Company B, 10th Iowa Infantry. He resigned his commission September 3, 1862, and returned home to his wife, who died December 18, 1865. He was living with his son Perry at the farm of his brother-in-law Jasper Hargis in 1870 (1870 US Census). He filed for a Mexican War veteran pension at Adel, Dallas County, Iowa, on January 29, 1887, and received certificate No. 18,857 (1885 IA Census; Pension File, NARA). He then moved to Red Bluff, Tehama County, California, where some of his adult children were living. He was still a resident at Red Bluff in 1900 (1900 US Census). He Later moved to Pasadena where he worked as a bookkeeper (1910 US Census, 1910 City Directory). He died at Belvedere, Los Angeles County, February 8, 1919 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
