Elias M. Agnew was born at Rushville, Illinois, in January 1846 (1850, 1860, 1900 US Census). He was the son of Andrew K. Agnew and Clarinda Marilla Colt. He was still living at Rushville when he enlisted as a private for 3 years on June 20, 1862. Private Agnew was mustered into Company G, 73rd Illinois Infantry, August 21, 1862. Private Agnew was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, on June 12, 1865. After the war he married Mary Catherine Yates in 1868 and established a residence in Iowa. He applied for a Civil War veterans disability pension at Keokuk, Iowa, December 19, 1882, and received certificate No. 319,224 (1885 IA Census; Pension File, NARA). He eventually moved to California, where he was living at Elsinore, Riverside County, in 1900, and then at Pasadena, Los Angeles County by 1910 (1900, 1910 US Census). After his death Mary filed for a widow's pension at Los Angeles on January 26, 1925, and received certificate No. 960,844.
