His military service began in the Army Air Corps in 1917 and then later he joined the United States Air Force, where he went around the world three times while enlisted.
He would try to stay in the towns when stationed places where he could learn the language.
He was in France and Germany during WWII. After the war he was transferred to Nagoya Japan. He taught the Japanese in Radio School. When he started they did not speak english nor did he speak Japanese. They did both speak French and that is the language he used until they knew enough English.
He married Mildred Mayme Byrd and they had two children
