Fred David McCoy, Jr., 87, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2011 at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. He was born on April 2, 1924, in Statesville to Fred David McCoy, Sr., and Margaret Leona M. McCoy. Mr. McCoy was a Navy veteran of World War II, and retired as a maintenance mechanic from Fiber Industries. He enjoyed working on his house and antique machines, and sharing stories. Mr. McCoy and his wife enjoyed many years of travel, especially with Christian Tours. He was a long-time member of First A.R.P. Church of Statesville, Lodge No. 27, A.F.& A.M. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Owens McCoy. Mr. McCoy is survived by his daughters, Kathy Robinson and her husband, John L. Robinson, of Cherryville, and Peggy O'Malley of Statesville and her fiance, Bill Wharton, of Florence, S.C., a brother, Thomas F. McCoy and his wife, Lillie, of Cleveland, and two sisters, Ruth M. Welch and her husband, Arlen, of Roseville, Calif., and Helen M. Wright and her husband, Jerry, of Lincolnton. He is also survived by grandchildren Laura Robinson and her husband, Andrew Thomasson, and John McCoy Robinson, and great-grandchild Malia Thomasson. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville. The Rev. Lynn Kunkle will officiate at the services. Visitation will follow the service. The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County and the Gordon Hospice House for the love and cared they showed Fred.
