Ben was the son of Massengill Martin Combs and Elizabeth "Betts" Combs. He married Matilda Combs in 1872. They were both 16 when they got married. Matilda was the daughter of Hiram Combs and Mary. They had the following children:

He married Maggie Williams before 1925. He was the youngest child, and therefore he inherited the family farm. He named the farm Bentown, and he was called TBen after that. He inherited a three mile stretch of land along Carrs Fork, from Accup to Vicco, which included the old house his parents built.
