WALTER, MARIA—Mrs. Maria Walter, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Heoppner, was born at Peoria, Ill., December 14, 1868. She was the eldest of seven children. In 1882 the Heoppner family came to Nebraska and located on a farm about two and one half miles west of Geneva.

February 28, 1895, she and Jackson Walter were united in marriage at Geneva, and they began their homemaking on a farm southwest of Shickley. In 1928 they retired from the farm and moved to Geneva to live. Mr. Walter preceded her to eternal rest April 27, 1933. They were the parents of three daughters, Caroline, who lived with her mother; Mrs. Mabel Holsinger of Carleton and Mrs. Sylvia Wilson of Shickley. Mrs. Walter is also survived by her youngest sister, Mrs. Clara Queram of Lincoln. There are also several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

The Hoeppner family was of staunch Lutheran faith and Mrs. Walter was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Peoria, Ill.
After her marriage the family worked in the Shickely Methodist church. On moving to Geneva, they became associated with the Methodist church here, and they were received into membership by Rev. H. C. Capsey, May 10, 1928.

Her children remember the good qualities of her religious faith and devotion, one of which was her giving of thanks at the table in her mother tongue, the German language, as if she could better express herself in the language she learned as a child. Of course she read her Bible and enjoyed the religious services which came to her by way of radio. Some twenty years ago she suffered a diabetic condition, from which she did not recover. Although she bravely faced her health problem, she was unable to be out and enjoy the affairs of church and community life. On the late evening of January 28, 1953, she went on to her eternal reward, aged 84 years, 1 month and 12 days.

Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church of Geneva, Thursday afternoon January 29, at 2 o'clock. Dr. F. E. Pfoutz gave the memorial tribute. Mrs. H. A. Rosenau sang "Going Down the Valley" and "The City Four-square" with Gayle Walton at the organ. Pallbearers were Lyman Brooke, Melvin Ellison, Ed Miller, Melvin Ralston, Marion Walton and Ervin Weber. Burial was in the Geneva cemetery.
