LaVerne was born June 10, 1918, in Gouldbusk, Coleman County, Texas to the late Robert Lee and Lola Mary Griffin. She attended Coleman High School, graduating in May 1935. In 1940, she married Tommy Gibbons. They lived in Pittsburg, Texas until he went into service, serving in the U.S. Naval Air force until his death in June of 1945. A daughter, Mary Gibbons, was born to this union in May of 1944.
In June of 1955, LaVerne married Jim Patrick who preceded her in death in July of 2002
LaVerne was an employee in the Accounting and Finance Department at Texas Tech University from which she retired in January of 1980. Following her retirement, she and Jim moved to Abilene where she has been a member of Crescent Heights Baptist Church since 1981. She was active in teaching the Dorcas Ladies Class for twenty years. She was a member of both the chapel choir and the senior choir. LaVerne served as Church Clerk for eighteen years.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Bennie Brigham of Dallas; two step-daughters, Mary Elizabeth Evans and Ann Patrick, both of Lubbock; also, she leaves two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Inez Davis of Abilene and Dorothy Johnson of Jacksboro; and several nieces and nephews.
