3 Kennewickites Die In Car Crash
Auto Runs Into Span Abutment
Gerald Ervin Acorn, 30, of 721 South Hartford Street, Kennewick, died Sunday night at a Boise Hospital, bringing the toll to three persons dead in a tragic highway collision near Hammett, Idaho early Sunday morning. Acorn's wife, Mrs. Ruby Fay Acorn, 24 and her brother, Willie Bob Rowell, aged 20, also of Kennewick were reported dead shortly after Acorn's car struck a concrete bridge abutment on U.S. Highway 30, two miles west of Hammett around 5AM Sunday.

Officers investigating the fatal crash said the automobile traveled along the shoulder of the road about 250 yards before it struck the solid concrete bridge. Officers were unable to determine which of the party was driving Acorn's 1950 sedan when the accident occurred. The car was demolished.

Injured in the accident, but expected to survive are the dead couple's two children, Velma Lavon, age three and Deborah Glee, age six months. The orphaned children received lacerations and bruises in the collision. The tragedy overtook the family as they were returning from a vacation trip to Rush Springs, Oklahoma where relatives of Mrs. Acorn and Rowell live. Neighbors of the Acorn family said Acorn was employed by General Electric at Richland and believed he was to have returned to his job Monday morning following his annual vacation.

Acorn, who was listed in "critical" condition from head injuries following the accident passed away Sunday evening at a Boise hospital about 60 miles from the scene of the crash, where he and his two daughters were taken.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.E. Acorn, 1611 Perkins, Richland; four sisters, Mrs. Berry Howard, 822 South Fruitland, Kennewick; Mrs. Radphord Howard and Mrs. Hugh McColley, both of Richland and a sister, Miss Blanche Acorn who lives with her parents. In addition he is survived by his grandmother, Mrs. J.E. Acorn, Kennewick; a cousin, E.H. Washam, Kennewick and a grand uncle, Milt James, now visiting in Kennewick from Colorado.

Mr. and Mrs. Acorn formerly lived in Richland, but moved to Kennewick several months ago when they purchased their home. Mrs. Acorn is survived by her two daughters, her mother and several brothers in Oklahoma and one sister in North Dakota.

Willie Bob Rowell, the third victim of the tragic accident is survived by his wife, Evelyn Rowell and a three month old boy, both of Kennewick. They had been staying with her parents in Prosser while Rowell was on his vacation trip. He is also survived by his mother, several brothers in Oklahoma and a sister in North Dakota. Rowell was an employee of Johnny's Minute Man Service in Richland. He came to the Tri City area from Oklahoma about five years ago and was married about 2 ½ years ago.
