Eben Haezer Vanden Hoek was born in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois, and died 23 June 1967 in Harrison, Douglas, South Dakota. South Holland is a town in the northeast of Illinois near Chicago, which was founded in 1846 by Dutch immigrants from the province Zuid- (= South) Holland. It was firstly called de Laage Prairie (= the Low Prairie] and has become wellknown for its many churches and onion growing.
Since 1884 Eben lives with his parents and siblings in or near the Dutch agrarian settlement Harrison in Douglas County in southeast South Dakota.
