Richard Scott Washington grew up in Germantown, PA and graduated from Germantown High School in 1942. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and was a tank gunner in the European theater. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped liberate several German concentration camps. After the war, he went to Swarthmore College on the G.I. Bill and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He married Lola Louise Barnhill Case on April 27, 1946. He went to work for IBM in 1950 as a customer engineer. Richard Scott's career at IBM took the family from Philadelphia, PA to Binghamton, NY to Reston, VA. Richard Scott was instrumental in the development of early computer systems. He retired from IBM in 1983. Richard Scott was well-known for his excellent wood working craftsmanship and made many beautiful furniture pieces in his life time.
