Obituary:
Dr. Daniel Chavez Chase was born in 1920 in Oxnard, Calif. He passed away peacefully Wednesday morning Aug, 22, 2012, with his wife of 70 years Judy, his oldest son, Dan Jr., and his dog, Molly by his side while big band music played in the background. He enjoyed many of his later years largely through his music, humor, rural country values and his relationships, especially his cherished wife, Judy. He kept his memory to the end and remembered and shared things about his music and family frequently. The family and all those that knew him are so blessed. Dan grew up in Ojai, Calif. As noted above, one of his great passions was music and he had his own band groups through high school and college; his bands appeared in Ventura ballrooms and other popular dance venues. He played the trombone and drums and arranged music for his groups. In 1938, he composed and published "We Dream," in honor of his childhood sweetheart, Judy Parker whom he knew since grammar school. In 1942, Dan and Judy married. Doctors said Dan had heart trouble and he should not become a Big Band leader. The military also turned him down, but a commander suggested Dan could serve his country best by becoming an agriculture educator for returning vets. He took the advice and shared his passion and desire by improving young people''s lives with education throughout his career. Dan and Judy both attended University of Arizona and Dan received his bachelor''s degree in Agricultural Education in 1946. From 1946 to 1952, Dan earned his master''s degree, taught vocational agriculture and advised award winning FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapters. Dan and Judy further persevered in writing for the Arizona Republic and became the Farm and Ranch Editors. In 1951, Dan headed the Agriculture Economics and Farm Management department for Arizona State University. Dan completed his Ph.D in Agriculture Education and Economics in 1954 from Penn State. He was then hired in 1954 by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo President Julian McPhee, and in 1959 was appointed Chairman of the Agricultural Business Management Department. Dan also helped instruct teachers from around the world who came to study Cal Poly''s farm operations. He also worked with the U.S. Agency for International Development and consulted with the California State Department of Real Estate and Pearson Realty in Fresno, Calif. He was president of the Cal Poly Faculty Association and the President of SLO Riding and Roping Club. In 1959, Dan and Judy began holding summer education conferences for the California chapter of the National Association of Farm and Land Brokers and continued these conferences for the next 21 years. He also founded the local school for Lumbleau Real Estate. Dan and Judy retired in 1979 and moved into their newly constructed home in Montecito, Calif. They traveled and Dan continued his love of music with his return to playing the piano. With Judy''s company, he enjoyed watching the dolphins and pelicans, gardening, raising their Humane Society dogs and daily lunches out to favorite spots with many visiting friends and family. Dan is survived by Judith Parker Chase, his wife and partner for 70 years and the love of his life. His children include Nancy Watts of San Luis Obispo, Dan Chase (Lisa Michaels) of Orinda, Calif.; Doug Chase (Robbie) of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and Jeff Chase (Debbie) of Saratoga, Calif.; grandchildren include Laura Watts, Karen Lencioni, Michael, Stephen, Caroline, Andrea, and Ken. Great-grandchildren include Emily Louise and Madeleine Grace Lencioni; siblings Rose Boggs, Maxine Tempske and Helen Peterson of Ojai, Calif., and Anita Rivard of Hayward, Calif. His brother, Frank Chavez predeceased him in 1961. No service will be held, except by the family. Dan''s memorial tablet is located at Santa Barbara Cemetery. Donations can be made to your favorite nature or animal protection charity, such as Nature Conservancy or Heal the Ocean.
