Richard Clifford Roberts was born a twin of William G. Roberts, 1883-1952, in Springfield, Washington County, Kentucky, to Harrison Simpson "Simpson" Roberts, 1844-1933, and Mary Elizabeth (Brent) Roberts, 1853-1941. His grandparents were: Richard Roberts, 1818-1862 and Elenor (Harris) Roberts, 1818-1853 and John D. Brent and Elizabeth (Garvis) Brent. His father was born in Henry County, Kentucky and his mother was born in Hart County, Kentucky.

His siblings were: Clarence Brent Roberts, 1879-1940; Elizabeth Eleanor Madox Roberts, the internationally read poet and novelist, 1881-1941; William G. Roberts, 1993-1952, and his twin, Richard Clifford Eoberts, 1883-1939; John Douglas Roberts, Sr., who died in Waco, TX, 1888-1969; and Luellen "Lel" (Roberts) Bernhardt, 1891-1974, who married Carl Bernhardt, 18xx-1970 and lived in Los Angeles, CA; and Ivor S. Roberts, 1895-19xx, who was made the literary executor for Elizabeth Madox Roberts and was living in St. Petersburg, FL in the mid-1970's.
