Allison married Virgina Rachael Dunn on February 3, 1858 in Smith County,TN. They then moved to Grapevine,TX . They had two children. Martha Allison born 1860, Willie Frances Allison born 1861. Capt Allison was also a doctor there in Grapevine before the Civil War began. The following is a quote from a battlefield report the day after the Battle of Atlanta.
Brigadier General J.A. Smith wrote: "Among the killed was the cool and intrepid Captain William M. Allison of the 18th Texas Regiment, commanding the skirmish line".

He was in command of Allison's Calvary Squadron made up of men from three tennessee counties, but mainly men from Dekalb County, Tn. Col Allison and his son Wiiliam fought in several of the same battles during the war.
