GREENFIELD -- Paul D. Tolan , 65, of Greenfield, died Monday, April 12, 2010, at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, following a short period of failing health, surrounded by his loving family.

A native of Greenfield, he was born on March 12, 1945 to Ralph J. Sr. and Gladys (McCleary) Tolan . Paul was educated in Montague public schools. He attended Turners Falls High School and graduated Smith Vocational School in Northampton.

Paul entered the USMC in September of 1964 and served during the Vietnam War. He was a recipient of a Silver Star for meritorious service, along with several campaign and service medals and ribbons. He was discharged from active duty with the rank of sergeant in September of 1968.

Upon his discharge from active duty and return to civilian life, Paul worked construction in the Florida Keys for two years. Returning to Greenfield, he worked for Mackin Construction Co. for a few years. Paul then owned and operated Tolan Construction and was a self-employed contractor. He was active in his business up until the time of his death.

Paul enjoyed many leisure time activities that included fishing, farming, storytelling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Paul was a member of the Oak Ridge Detachment of the Marine Corps League of Bernardston, as well as of American Legion Post 81 and of the Greenfield Lodge of Elks, BPOE 1296. Paul was a staunch supporter of research for Juvenile Diabetes.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila (Xie) Tolan and her daughter, Monia Wang of Greenfield; Paul 's loving daughter, Tanya ( Tolan ) Hale and her husband Gregory of Manchester, Vt., and Paul 's three grandchildren, Richard Paul , Rachel Ann and Renae Marie. Additionally, he is survived by his two siblings, Ralph J. Tolan of Rockford, Ill., and Mary L. Novak of Seaford, Md. Paul also leaves a longtime friend and confidant, Robert Bialecki.

Services were held at Locus Hill Cemetery in Montague on Friday, April 16, 2010.
