Elaine Carrie (Mackey) James, age 67, of Yankton, SD died after a seven-year battle with cancer on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD.
Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory in Yankton in charge of arrangements. A wake service will be held at the Oyate Oyanke Community Center, Santee, NE on Sunday, August 26th, 2012. Reverend Patricia (White Horse) Carda will be officiating along with Bishop Creighton Robertson.
Final Committal at the Oyate Oyanke Community Center, Santee, NE, on Monday August 27, 2012. Services at the Most Merciful Savior (OMMS) Church, Santee, NE. Final burial will be at the OMMS Cemetery, Santee, NE. Pallbearers are: Tom Estes, Les Rouillard, Beau Red Owl, Ardene DeCory, Dewey Saul and Jerry James.
Elaine was born in Winnebago, NE to Clarence and Inez (Rouillard) Mackey on March 8, 1945. Elaine was baptized and confirmed at Blessed Redeemer Church, Howe Creek, Santee Reservation. Elaine grew up in Niobrara, NE and graduated high school at Niobrara in 1963, and then went to secretarial school in Huron, SD. Elaine received an associate's degree and then moved to Omaha, NE where she worked for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company. In 1971, Elaine moved back to Niobrara, where she then began working for the Santee Sioux Nation of NE as a bookkeeper/payroll clerk. In 1973, Elaine married Henry "Jim" James on November 14, 1974. Elaine and Jim had two children, Tonya James and Joseph "Jamie" James. With this union, Elaine and Jim's families were combined to include all of their children, Deborah Mackey, Darren James and Sophia James. Elaine loved to collect angel figurines and cookie jars, and she also loved to create picture albums of her friends and family. Elaine also enjoyed going to various casinos where she loved the penny slots.
Elaine was recognized by the Santee Sioux Nation for her dedication, longevity, and work ethic with the Tribe in 2007.
Elaine is survived by her husband Jim (Yankton, SD); sons Darren James (Santee, NE), and Jamie (Carole) James (Vermillion, SD); daughters Deborah Mackey (Lincoln, NE), Tonya James (Lincoln, NE); nephew Lloyd "Chris" James (Yankton, SD); four grandchildren MacKenzi Saul (Lincoln, NE), Kobei Saul (Lincoln, NE) Dayle James (Columbus, NE), and Nevaeh James (Lincoln, NE); 3 great grandchildren; and sister Gaynell Rouillard (Santee, NE).
Elaine is preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Inez Mackey, and two brothers Clinton and Dean Mackey.
