Civil War Service:

John Blevins left his home in Winston County to enlist at Huntsville, AL in Company E, 1st Regiment Middle Tennessee Cavalry, U.S. Volunteers on Jul 24, 1862. Private Blevins signed up with Captain Bankhead to serve 3 years in the United States Army.


On Jan 6, 1863, he was wounded by an accidental pistol shot from a neighbor and member of his company, Private William H. Hefner. By the time Private Blevins returned to duty in Jul 1863, Company Muster Rolls were being submitted as Company K, 1st Alabama Cavalry.


From Jan 1865 until Apr 1865, Private Blevins was a guard at Brigade Headquarters.


On Mar 10, 1865, he received a head wound from a Confederate saber during the Battle of Monroe's Crossroads at Solomon Grove, NC.


During John Blevins's period of service, Company K participated in many battles and campaigns including Cherokee Station, Bear Creek, Barton's Station, Streight's North Alabama Raid, Vincent's Crossroads, Atlanta Campaign battles at Dalton, Snake Creek Gap, Resaca, Rome Cross Roads, Dallas, Kennesaw Mountain, Nickajack Creek, Chattachoochee River, Decatur, the Battle of Atlanta and the Battle of Jonesboro, Sherman's March to the Sea, the Siege of Savannah and Sherman's Carolina Campaign.


On Jul 19, 1865, Private John Blevins mustered out of the Union Army at Nashville, TN.
