Aged 26 years enlisted September 25, 1863 as Private with Co. L. 1st Alabama Cavalry mustered out September 28, 1864 at Roma GA. Re-enlisted November 1, 1864 promoted Sergeant July 11, 1865 mustered in July 19, 1865 mustered out October 20, 1865 at Huntsville Alabama.

He married Sarah Jane Dodd 24 November 1859 in Hall Co., GA and later married Mariah Duke.

He gave his birth date as August 26, 1837.

Willis and Margaret Barton had five sons who served in Company L of the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USA under Captain Sanford Tramel and then Captain Alonson Edwards: Jonathan, Gilford, James, Madison, and William H.
They had three son-in-laws who also served in this regiment: F.C. Harris, Jesse D. Hyde, and Thomas H. Blackstock.
