Joseph Robert Rawlins Sr. was the eldest son of Joseph Craft Rawlins and Cathrine Mary Hill.

Note: There are several documented discrepancies in his birth year, other than the 1840 shown on his headstone and military grave marker. Early census records indicate 1847, military history records show 1844, but death certificate and Civil War pension application reflect 1840. His parents didn't marry until 16 Jun 1844, and older sister Mary was born in April, 1845, so most of his family's genealogists believe his birth was in 1847. Family lore is that he altered it to join the military (which might also explain some of the confusion that ensued when he later applied for his pension in Texas).

He served in the Confederate army during the U.S. Civil War - Company 'C', 2nd Virginia Infantry, under Captain Nadenbush (Stonewall Jackson's original division)

He married to Alice "Annie" Barkley on 01 Jan 1884 in Hempstead County, Arkansas. They had eight children: David Franklin, Harry Mitchell, Alice Elvira, Jessie Clifton, Katie, Joseph Robert, Manila and twins Manila and John Dewey.

---

He was first married to Indiana Lee in Bartow County, Georgia in 1870. Their first child Joseph died in 1871-1872 and their daughter Kathron Lee Rawlins (d. Chicago, 1924) married first Arthur T. Stewart on February 2, 1889 in Fulton county, Georgia. They had Harry L. Stewart (b, 1892 Atlanta, GA) and married second William F. Howard (d. Chicago 1924). by whom she had two daughters Augusta and Anne. I am writing a biography of Col. George Washington Lee, Indiana Lee's father, Robert S. Davis, [email protected]
