Enlisted for the duration of the war on 3/22/1862 in Lynchburg, VA., he was mustered into Company C, 4th Virginia Regiment Heavy Artillery as a Private.
Promoted to 3rd Corporal 6/1/1864.

Present on all Rolls until Sept & Oct 1864 Roll when listed as having been severely Wounded In Action 10/27/1864 outside of Petersburg, VA.; right arm suffered a gunshot wound above the elbow with bone shattered, necessitating amputation almost to shoulder; hospitalized C.S.A. General Hospital, Petersburg,; given Medical Furlough 12/13/1864.
The 34th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1862, with men from Norfolk, Richmond, and Yorktown, and the counties of Gloucester, Mecklenburg, Bedford, Greene, and King and Queen. For almost two years the unit served as heavy artillery attached to the Department of Richmond and was known as the 4th Heavy Artillery. In May, 1864, it was assigned to Wise's Brigade as infantry. It participated in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and saw action in various conflicts around Appomattox.
On 4/2/1888, age 51 and living in Glenwood, Rockbridge County, VA., he applied for a full Disability Confederate Pension as he lost his right arm in the war. He was approved 5/28/1888.
