One Of The Oldest Residents Dies;
Napoleon Gauthier, 76, Was Ludlow Mfg. Co. Pensioner
Ludlow, Sept. 12-Napoleon Gauthier, 76, of 14 Prospect St., one of this town's oldest and best known residents, died this afternoon in the Ludlow Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Gauthier retired from the employ of the Ludlow Manufacturing and Sales Corporation 20 years ago and was the company's oldest pensioner.
Born in New York State. The Ludlow man was born in Champlain, N.Y. and came to this town as a boy of four and had lived here ever since. He was employed by the local plant for 48 years, and in the later years serving a section hand in the old gunny weave room. He was the last of a large family of Gauthiers who settled here when the town was called Jenksville and his first home was in a house located where Szarlan's store stands in the business block on East St. He witnessed No. 8 mill being built and watched the bell being placed in the tower in the year 1900.
Well-Known Hunter
Mr. Gauthier was also well known in town as a hunter and fisherman and enjoyed these sports until a few months ago. He was the father of six boys, all of whom were well known in athletics in this section. He was a charter member of the St. Jean de Baptiste Society, Loyal Order of Moose and the Foresters of America.
He leaves six sons, Fred, Hector, Arthur, Homer, Leo and Walter, all of this town; two daughters, Mrs. Ida Gemme and Mrs. Ella Lavigne, also of Ludlow.
The funeral will be held from the Ratell Funeral home in Indian Orchard, Monday morning followed by a high mass of requiem at 9 in St. Jean de Baptiste Church. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Indian Orchard.
