TOMAS HOLGUIN

CARLSBAD--Thomas Quintana Holguin was born in Carlsbad on July 19, 1946 to Rita Quintana Holguin of Redford, Texas, and Santiago Gallegos Holguin of Delicias, Chihuahua. He died on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at 12:12 a.m. at Kindred Hospital.

He was the youngest of 12 and is survived by four brothers, Mike Holguin of Albuquerque, Daniel Holguin of Carlsbad, Santiago Holguin Jr. of Corrales and Alfonso Holguin of El Paso; six sisters, Micaela Gonzales, Elizabeth Cook and Maria Holguin of Albuquerque, Amelia Herrera of San Jose, Calif., Eustolia Ielacqua of Belen, and Ramona Holguin of Oakland, Calif.; 28 nieces and nephews; 35 great-nieces and great-nephews; three great-great nieces and nephews; and by his godchildren, Kristin Hughes of Rio Rancho, Jennifer Flores of Albuquerque and Alfonso Holguin Jr. of El Paso.

He was met in heaven by both of his parents; his brother, Lazaro Holguin of El Paso; and a niece, Maria del Rosario "Cissy Holguin.

Tom faced the challenges of quadriplegia for 39 years, living three times longer than his life expectancy.

Educated at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, he served his community as a career/educational counselor for the disabled and incarcerated. He was a Big Brother and Special Olympics volunteer and an outspoken lobbyist/advocate for health care and equal access for the disabled.

A rosary was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at St. Therese Parish on Fourth St. south of Candelario. A Mass was held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6. Remains will be interred at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park in Carlsbad at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
